just use a normal carp set up with alarms bait is the main thing i prefer lamphrey or popped up roach but people have there own choice you will also need a good light set up and unhooking mat hope this helps happy hunting

Bob, I personally don't pike fish at night because I find that Eels become a nightmare on a lot of waters, I always stay an hour into dark.
I know you wouldn't do it but because of the thread title I'd just like to state that you should never sleep whilst piking at night, it's completely different to carp fishing and WILL at some stage involve a deep hooked fish if you're not right on your rods.

I'll echo that, you would not believe how many traces I've had mangled by eels and only an eel section as bait slows them down but as thats become a sensitive point I'll leave it there.
I would strongly recommend ledgering with a 2oz+ lead as bite indication is more positive.
Don't bother with any sort of float rig or freeline unless you know exactly what you are doing or you will need arseps instead of forceps !
I can remember in the early 80s when we used to change over to pike for the Winter on Yateley Car Park . We couldnt get a run in the day,so i decided to try a night.First night ,i had a screamer a couple of hours after dark. Keith Sullivan heard the alarm and came round to help me net it.As it went into the net ,he turned round and said "its a pike"He thought i was still carping.Any way, turned out it was 21lb 4ozs caught on freelined half mackerel tail and we carried on doing the nights for pike which seemed more productive than the days.

I've had pike at night, plenty of them. Hatchet pond in the early 80's was productive in the dark, as were Petersfield heath and vinnetrow, but eels were just a nightmare. Some were big old fish too, just short of 6lb being the best.
It's just those that bivvy up a la carp style and sleep away from the rods that concern me.

I was thinking of using the Dyson rig, with a Pro leader length from the 2ozs lead and a short Pro-Leader hooklink to a largish single hook, bent with rig tube !!
Like the Eel rig, but with a bigger bait.
