I've never fished for them cos they're uglier than Starman and I don't want my picture taken with something that ugly.
but they don't drink stella and take the **** out you!
I haven't fished the Match lake but have had two cats recently on the Split lake. Both took multiplex boilies!!
The first was 21lb 8oz and was caught mid morning, while the second was 28lb 8oz and was caught at 2 am on Saturday, so it seems that they are feeding at any time!!
I hope that you have the same success on the Match as these two have been my first experience of the cats!!
cheers boo are you going to have ago on the match lake for the cats?

Neil,
I too used to think cats were ugly. I changed my mind when I caught some, and a 40 lb fish that I photographed for an angler fishing next to me was absolutely magnificent. Their mottled markings are impressive, and, unlike many fish that have just been caught, they are always grinning !

have not fished the match or split but do like to do some early season catting elsewhere i have had more sucess between april and june with boilies, monster persuit ,active 8 and more recently quality baits gear. I believe this has more to do with water temperature than any thing else and the cats unwillingness to chase their pray.Once the temperature warms up and everybody starts to use live baits it can pay to be different. i have done well with big bunches of lobs air injected ,tie a pva bag of pellets to your lead and nick the hook to the outside.Even better than this if cost is not an option use the medusa rig with pva bags at least six pints needed for a day.
I know there are 2 or more 40s in the match, as I know someone who has had 2 different 40s out of there.
The same bloke told me about how he has had 4 out in 1 night, the smallest being 29! And he doesnt even fish for them!
Your best chance of a cat is near the 1st island as thats where most of them lurk. A good swim is the point, as it covers a good part of the island, and it also has a small bay to the right of it which is also good for cats.
Fish any sort of stinky oily fishy bait and you should do well.
