View Full Version : Sandhurst - first impressions

I took a trip early Friday morning to Sandhurst lake, arriving at around 8am in the morning, there was a couple of inches of snow on the ground and half the lake was frozen due to the overnight temperatures plummeting, first impression was what a lovely lake, i was taken around the lake by Nerys and Dave who are Sandhust baliffs, on walking onto the venue we noticed a couple of deer running off up the bank, cant say i have seen many deer on fisheries in my time, but what a wonderfull sight to greet you on your first trip to a new lake, Nerys and Dave kindly showed me around the swims and explained some of the features out in front of them, i must say the swims are nice and neat and well spaced out from each other giving you your own water to fish to, after a quick look around it was time to purchase my ticket from Yateley angling which was about 1.5 miles away from the lake so its very convenient if you fancy fishing the lake on the off chance, i purchased my ticket from Ruth who even offered me a cup of coffee, something you dont normally get the first time you drop into a new tackle shop, it was then time for food and i went along thr road to the cafe called short and sweet i think from memory, i ordered 2 bacon sandwiches to go and a cup of coffee £4.65 !!!! how much...shant be going there again i can tell you as thats a bit expensive for me. on arriving back at the lake and a couple of phone calls to 'Cash' and information that Nerys and Dave had given me earlier that morning i decided to fish the right hand island swim as quite a bit of the lake was half frozen and this swim gave me the option of fishing the middle of the lake. i was all set up and cast out to various spots (Remembered for the BCAC qualifier in April) and settled in for the night, unfortuntely i did not catch anything, and conditions had deterioated in as much that the guy over the opposite bank and the angler to the right further along had there lines frozen in overnight i think it went down to -6 apparently, but it was just nice being somewhere different and new for a change and can thouroughly recommend Sandhurst as there are in the region of 400 fish with Tyson at 35+ as bonus if you are lucky enough to catch her, my monies on Tyson being 40+ within 2 season, on the whole i enjoyed the experience and will be making the 1.5 hour trip down again in a months time i suspect to try and catch one of those fish that eluded me this time, i must say a big thanks to Nerys,Dave and Cash for pointing me in the right direction on Sandhurst, if you have not had a go down Sandhurst yet, then get yourself down there as its a lovely and well run fishery.

honourary would be nice...lol

just thought someone who was thinking about going to sandhurst might like to know a little bit about it and i thought i'd share something with you guys and to say thankyou to Nerys,Dave and Cash for the info.

p.s. forgot to say i did get a rather strange pikey/gypsy looking type of fellow come and have a cup of tea with me about 10pm...very strange fellow indeed beware of this guy he's quite a common character around yateley apparently... http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/grin.gif

funny thing was i met him in the car park at 9:30 the following morning as well...!!!

Cooo.... raf you are a nice boy ain't ya!!

Nah, it was nice to meet you finally, and I'm glad you liked sandy.... I like it too, but then I'm biased!! It was a lovely morning last friday too.... with the sun on the ice, and the ice on the ice.... and then on sunday the SWANS got frozen into the ice too......

Laugh??? I was crying http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

damn cygnet got its tail and wing feathers frozen in behind it LOLOL (it got out in the end!!)

As I'm sitting here tapping away, its gone 4, and in within two hours I'll be back on the bank... sneak a quickie in http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif and then back to work tomorrow.... think I should be able to fish 5 nights this week if I'm lucky...

managed around 100 nights last year.... got to go some to beat that this year!

15-01-2003, 16:09
...blimey....full timer!

I've managed two nights this season!

G_RAAAA
15-01-2003, 16:14
just out of curiosity..how many fish did u catch in those 100 nites ??

G

Nerys
15-01-2003, 16:23
did about 80 of those on Sandy I reckon G,

I've had about 26 fish (ish) (short term memory problems!!)

best fish 21.4 mirror, 20.4 linear mirror, 19.14 dunge common
and that 10.8 baby fully scaled.... pretty as a picture she was!

Its not the best catch rate I know, but for my first full season on a water I'm reasonably happy with that.

Only started fishing my 'own' swim back in May ish instead of doubling up with dave all the time.... much more scope now!

Damn she devil of a lake STILL hasn't thrown a 20 common at me though *tsk* never mind eh..

I want that common BEFORE Tyson...... I like Tyson, don't get me wrong, but I'd like a 20 common first......

RAFLEE
15-01-2003, 16:26
Nerys,

In your opinion how many 20+ commons and 20+ mirrors are in Sandy

Nerys
15-01-2003, 16:42
Heavens... now theres a question....

On my catch rate, which is near enough 1:10 then that must put a head of maybe 50 20's in there...

I have pics of quite a few of the 20's that have been out, and although some are repeats, I must have a good few still...

A lot of the dunge commons will go 20's easily now I would think... 'hole-in-the-head' (sorry fish!!) went in 19, came out 21 to takedowns lad, and the 19.14 I had was up in weight too from stocking.. the biggest dunge common stocked was 25 (got pics) I believe

Tyson has gained 2lb since stocking in there, and that fish's previous best weight in its old home was 35.12 I'm told.... thats only 4oz more than its last capture from Sandhurst.... bless our *stunted* lovies...

there has to be 50+ 20lb carp in there these days though... and I'd have thought that to be on the cautious side of a guess...

Oh... raf that reminds me... have dug out some 'measles' fish pics.... when u and Mr 40 coming down next??

OneToner
15-01-2003, 16:55
yes but fish are generally at their ultimate weights this time of year, and will drop again rest assured. It would be great if Tyson could do 40, but I can't see it, not with so many other fish in such a small pond, albeit full of weed and naturals. we'll see !

Don't know about 50 20s Nerys more like 80 to 100. Last year I think I had 18 fish in 10 or so nights and had 6 over twenty.
Didn't realise the original linear had been out at 30 and ounces ( this wks Carp Talk)

Give'm plenty of bait folks they love it down there !!!

I was about to say the same Viv, i had quite a few myself and certainly never managed 100 nights, more like 14! 80-100 is a fair judgement.
And yeah i spied the Linear at 30lb+ also, not bad for a *regular* 28!! They do like their food, feed 'em up.
Milky, may have to meet up next weekend on the Hurst!

Nerys
20-01-2003, 10:38
Cash, you make me laugh mate, I don't think you are a bad bloke, but really, where do you get your information from????

I can count the fish that have been out of sandhurst since pretty much mid december on the fingers of two hands...

there have only been 2 fish out so far THIS YEAR, and the lake was only frozen for about 5 days....

and for that matter I'm sure not many people would say that
"they are on the munch" when the only things thay are picking up are single fluro hook baits..... how you can say that of off the back of ONE angler getting ONE run beats me...

and the fact that there are 500 odd fish in 12 acres of water, and 10 anglers only had 1 fish and 2 runs between them all weekend kinda makes me wonder where you get your facts from.... coz it certainly ain't from on the bank honey....

I know its all very nice to get people interested in the place, but feeding them mis-information is not helping

How fed up am I of people giving it the "cash says its hauling at the moment in carp talk" line, all you are creating is disappointed punters mate.. and readers who think you don't know what you are talking about

maybe next weekend it will, and I hope for you guys coming down it will, but its NOT at the moment, no matter what cash says, and it hasn't since about November....

Big deal, its winter, and its a pukka venue, and it will fish well, it just ain't happening yet!

(ps... any chance we can keep the 2 pages of drivel (sorry - amusing banter - ) that will follow this to the non-angling chat board)

Nerys
20-01-2003, 12:26
no mate.... got out the same side as normal...

just think its a shame that when people ask about the lake, they are not getting accurate information from you...

Don't forget, YAC don't sell all the tickets for this venue, nor do any of them fish there, so their knowledge, although local and useful, is sometimes about as accurate as yours...

and for that matter its a bit odd for me to be told by a punter that YAC said to the poor guy before xmas that he had more chance of winning the lottery than catching a carp from sandhurst and why was he wasting his time buying a ticket MMMmm... YAC I love you all....but please.... there's honest, and then there is BLUNT

there have been no more or less angling than normal really cash, its been quiet all year, with hardly anyone ever on in the week, and up to 15 at the weekends... this weekend we had 10 or so on.. and one or two in the week

don't forget that sandy is fished by the ALL the bailiff team quite regularly, so as a group we do retain a far better idea of the current conditions on the water than any of the magazines or shops will ever do....

Cash, I've always been more than happy to help wherever I can on sandy despite the fact that I've only been in this game 5 minutes...

have you ever seen a post saying "I'm not going to tell you" from me????? No. and yet I have from you....

I have more to lose by telling everyone where the clear spots are, when the feeding times are, what the baits being used etc etc than you do seeing as you don't even fish it at the moment, yet I'll be helpful even to the stage of giving out my number so people can call in advance and check out the conditions on the day....

All I'm saying is that I wish you would check your facts and get the [censored]-ing story straight before you whoop everyone into a "sandy is fishing its nuts off" frenzy again, when we so know that its not.. either that or at least bother to spend some time down there..... and that doesn't include stopping at the gate to drop mats off for a review...

(PS http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/laugh.gif but hey, I know you're just a regular guy, trying to get on with a bit of PR....)

Bless yer, your not a happy bunny today are you! I'll bring the gloves down at the weekend so you can use me as a punch bag to rid your anger.
The "Hurst" needs people to fish it regular, they do as you say, it also needs a bit of bait going in, quite a bit in fact. It keeps them stirred up. I don't doubt that from time to time it gets hard and shuts down for a bit, this ever changing weather we have been getting.
Once the weather settles down it'll fish well again. Christ the potential is there, 500 fish in 12 acres, thats more than enough for at least a bite! A bit of PR will help the lake no end, if people get down there, put bait out and fish it well they have a bloody good chance of a fish, and with that a 20!
Like you say, I haven't been down there much this year, but will be down a bit between now and April, playing!
If you want to email me weekly with an "accurate" update to how its fishing I'll be quite happy. Gathering info, and accurate info at that for the whole of the Yateley / Colne Valley area isn't the easiest, you should try it sometime. Most reports are second or third hand, thats just the way it is i'm afraid. The majority of the time though its pretty accurate, and i don't see too many people willing to do the job!
So keep me informed with whats happening, then at least the "Hurst" part of the report will be 100% accurate!!!!! http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif
