New to pike fishing ,Just bought some lures and spoons from a website i was given on here, on the back packet of one of the spoons it sais this.
This product contains lead, chemical known to cause cancer and birth defects and other reproductive harm do not place your hands in your mouth after handling this product or do not not put this product in your mouth.
My questions are
1: is this safe for the fish
2: is it safe to use
They don't sound very good to me, any thing with a warning like that on it in this day and age would get me sending it right back to where it come from. Surley there is no need to use anything like that any more in the production of lures.

I would suggest that for the fish to be in trouble, it would have to eat the lure, by which time cancer is the last thing on its mind as it will be starving to death due to not being able to eat, having a large plastic obstruction hooked in its throat...:dissapoint:
If you are a complete novice, try and find someone experienced to fish with. Pike are EXTREMELY delicate and many people find handling them a bit daunting. Otherwise, good luck!!!

I'm going with an experienced pike angler from work but he's off sick and wanna get these back to supplier if i have to asap. Surely the spoon will still be in its mouth and as the warning is dont put your fingers in your mouth after touching can only be bad for the fish aswell no?

Few things on earth are that toxic... obviously you need to be happy with what you are doing, but do you lose sleep when you leave a lead in the lake when carp fishing? Its health and safety taken to the extreme. Does it also say " caution: hooks may be sharp !"

I think the manufacturer has gone health and safety mad, like the people that make peanuts for sainsburies and the like, and feel the need to write "may contain nuts" on the side.

I really wouldn't worry. I've got a pile of stuff from an online lure and terminal tackle selling website that obviously imports lots of stuff from america. On the back of a pack of 'eagle claw' wire traces it says:
"WARNING - This product contains lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects and other reproductive harm."
Seems to be just a standard thing that items containing what are probably just trace amounts of lead have to have printed on them if produced in California. Like kathrynshubby says, H+S gone mad. I would think the risks towards anyone - human or fish - are so slim that its not worth worrying about.
EDIT: See Link (http://www.nmma.org/supplychain/ca.asp)

"WARNING - This product contains lead, a chemical known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects and other reproductive harm."
standard practice .
if somebody smokes in ONE room of an hotel , the whole hotel has to have signs !!
re: the lures ....
i wouldnt worry about the warning , but then again if i wasnt happy with something it would play on my mind . this in turn has got to affect your confidence ... ;)
imho , california will pretty soon ban lead for fishing weights .
we allready have steel and biodegradeable ones on sale .
(they'll probobly ban fishing too if they get there way)

the warning originates at a guess in california and reads
it is known to the state of california that lead can cause....
its the claims culture over there, and the health freaks of california in particular
if your worried about lead i take it you dont use any lead in any of your fishing....
well its been said above hence the reason for the edit
