The section along the road that leads up to the lock is a free stretch. Unfortuantly, to fish the island you will need a Lock Licence, unless that has changed. It's been a long time since I fished there though. Nice bit of the Thames that is.

All publicly accessable bank from Runnymeade down is free. For Penton Hook lock and surrounding area you will need an EA Thames lock & weir permit. £26 I think for 19 weirs.

Paul - I have always wondered what does that actually give you? Does it mean you are allowed to fish the pool from a boat allbeit from a safe distance?

I fish some of the weirs already and have never been aske for a weir license, is this luck?

Nick, it most certainly does. As long as your boat is registered with the EA.

As for the luck, yes. Although not all the Thames weir are on the permit. I take that to mean that you don't need the permit to fish them :).

Thanks. Will check the ones I am currently casting a line into and check.

You don't need a weir permit to navigate into Thames weirs and fish them from a boat.

Exiled barbelman is quite correct, weir permit covers bank fishing only, boat angling only requires a registered boat licence.

Not had one for at least 10 years but then they only allowed you to fish 1 rod and you couldn't even have a 2nd set up. I also seem to remember that some of the weirs require particular foorwear eg studded boots or waders, extra long handled landing nets and all sorts of other odd rules to cover fishing from poor vantage points.

And also bear in mind that most weirs have no parking anywhere near them.

I'll stick with my boat then :)

I also gave up my weir permit a few years back. Penton Hook used to be brilliant but you had to be off by seven (sort of);) Had some good catches out of the weirs especially upstream and early season but they were, like the previous poster has said a bit dodgy to say the least. Fishing off Bray weir walkway on a windy day 40ft up with a drop net is not comfortable! Boats can fish the weir run at Penton or any other weir where its not marked as private but will be moved off by the lock keepers if they moor up on the bank

Yes you do, if it happens to be one of the weirs on the permit. Check the website.

If that is the case it is not enforced Paul (In my experience anyway)
Only time I have ever been moved on was when I tied up to the weir structure itself

I was under the impression that the weir permit allowed you to fish from the bank. From a boat I thought you could fish anywhere, as long as the boat was registered
