I was fishing the other day when I watched this lad cast across the lake straight up a big willow. He didnt just clip it he nearly went over it. Anyway we've all done that and I watched him pull for a breakwhich he did. He then retied his rig etc and did exactly the same thing again. I went over and showed him how to cast near the tree then pull some line off his spool and clip it in the spool clip. He recast and it dropped a bit short, he pulled off some more line and repeated the process until he got it right. These little things save birds and other wildlife not to mention our pocket money if we keep losing stuff.
Clipping can be a dangerous thing if you give it some welly and the line breaks at the clip. I always take a thick rubber band with me and when I get my distance put the rubber band on the spool, the type the postman uses.. I learned this from Beach casting where we whack a 6oz lead 200 yards or more. Try it and if you do accidently hit the cast too hard you won't break off as the band is a bit more forgiving than a clip.

Sounds like a good idea, I will try that. I dont have a problem with casting too hard though when clipped up because I can cast pretty accurately as it is but as you say it would possibly make it a bit safer on the line damage aspect. The line must twang against the clip even if you get the cast spot on and this could cause a nick in the line maybe.

Rather good those posty rubber bands, far safer than most of poor quality spool clips that are fitted as standard, even thought of cutting down a neoprene rod band to size
I was just about to say that Jim but youve said it for me. You shouldnt use a clip if your trying to get under a bush because it wont let it go that extra bit in and also will pull the lead away as the lead sinks. I do however put the line on the clip a litle bit further up to stop the lead going to far into the bushes.
KEEP IT REAL, KEEP IT CLIPPED!
