Loads of regular bait. If you bait up with small particles like hemp, maize blah de blah de blah etc, then most of it will be cleared up by the masses of other species before it hits bottom. You need bait that will last. Buy yourself a few sacks of extra large halibut pellets and some decent sized/quality boilies and cut to the chase. If you want some carpet feed, then mix up a couple of bins of vitalin et al, roll it into balls and freeze it, then you've got some easily distributed feed launched by hand exactly where you want it. Don't fanny about. Use Massive leads and massive baits. 40-50mm hard boiled hook baits and at least 6oz semi fixed grippers to avoid the chub and bream. It will save you alot of sleepless nights. They'll do their best to ruin it for you, but as long as you've got your location down to some confirmed sightings, then the carp will muscle in eventually and once they're there then nothing else will get a look in. Having said that, I might be lying.

As soon as it hits June/01 I'm counting down the days.
I had a look at a local river this weekend and it looks jucy to say the least.
There's something about flowing water that captivates.

I think you will find that's a seaonal algal bloom, completely harmless. At least that's what the venerable Cass ( Waterwhirl) on the BFW site reckons and he knows his onions!

He does indeed (even if he is a terrible poivert)
Happens quite often at this time of year - usually clears for the open

Was out watching a few fish this weekend. Definately up for a bit of sexy time. All sorts in there, cracking mirrors, commons, a lovely coppery orange common and what looked like a big brown goldfish or crucian.
Feeding time soon

it will be like bivy city this time next week on barge walk
Like always its gonna be busy along there
but give it a week or so , a few losses and loads of bream they will be gone :)
The stretch I fish went from 15+ anglers on opening night, to never sharing a mile of bank with more than 2/3 others........
How's the rain affecting things over the last two days? Found a little spot that should be spot on if it floods.....

Normal level and clearing at Reading and Maidenhead
Flow up slightly as you would expect due to the rain but it was well needed to kick start the removal of the brown algae. I notice there is also a dirty great tree which has been washed into your swim and is now stuck there, nice holding feature though

Is it Bivvy City at Kingston yet?
I got a private weir pool to fish on the Thames this year on my club ticket. It backs on to a farm, nice and quiet. Went down today for a lead about and there is a strip of clean, rocky gravel running for about 100 metres right down the centre of the river where the weir pool runs off. Pukka, pukka, pukka.

We had a major banter about the problem of anglers abusing the close season ruling on threads posted on previous seasons River Thames forum.
I hope the EA are out in force next week to check licences to enforce and make examples of those not purchasing one (or two like me) - Unless they are blind or lacking brain/thinking power, next weeks an ideal time to check licences ( + catch evaders)
Just scrap the ancient closed season ruling + all this guff will be sorted. The only people to "suffer" will be the commercial fisheries who coin it during March-June.
Tight lines,
Nogbert Jalfrezi
I'll second you there noggie. EA pull yer finger out and make your presence known. If they kept up the pressure results might occur.but then pigs might fly.
Paid £52.00 hard earned cash on line today for the licences. Hope to see some enforcement action this year. Well i hope my £££'spaid into the pot should go towards paying for the EA enforcement geezers salaries
Hang on - paying for 8 months fishing? if i dont go to lakes but only go on the river can i lawfully request a refund:bonk:

Not looking for somewhere to squat, simply wondering if mooring near or by it will be an issue :-)
does that mean it is no longer occupied ?
Not looking for somewhere to squat, simply wondering if mooring near or by it will be an issue :-)
Story is the previous owner was a crook, got rights to the island by telling the council he would do x,y and z for watersports but really ran up huge bills with his suppliers and legged it with the cash.
The local marina's (ours included) want to do something with it related to watersports but the council can't agree to the terms so it's sitting there empty. At least it was until swampy and co got hold of it. As I understood it they wanted to make it a green conference centre for peace loving brothers and sisters around the UK, but people objected because they looked unsightly and probably didn't wash and therefore didn't fit in with the surroundings, OK yah.
So in short, yes you can moor there unless someone else has beaten you to it, but there are so many other better spots :)

Have you got a photobucket account? If so upload to there and then post the link to the photo rather than trying to attach a photo to your post. If you haven't got a photobucket account then it's easy to sign up online.

Right .....Well that was a good first week lol......
Got to the swim 36 hours before the off stuck in some bait over the time feeling very confident about 100kilos wet weight by the off for nothing...Not a bleep. Not a bream, not a chub NOTHING for two nights saw NOTHING had NOTHING. We woke up on the second morning and looked at each other and just new it was not going to happen so packed up the boat and moved on wanting to find them rather than them find us a few miles away a great looking area had caught our eye did the night for yep you guessed it NOTHING!!!!!
And so it went on till yesterday fished four spots well apart from each other all of which we where very confident in. And each morning we woke totally amazed that nothing had happened......but lots of swimming...well me not Adam.... Wuss.....and looking about has found some good looking swims for when they decide to put in an apperance...

I'll be out fishing on Friday, was hoping to get out today but injured my shoulder and can barely move my arm.
Fished last night to , a big fat blank
conditions didnt look good
So who smashed their rod on the tidal on Sunday morning? I was out for a run, and between Richmond and Twickenham bridges I heard a big crack. Looked out into the river and there was a big swirl by one of the islands and a guy in a boat with half his rod sliding down the line. Looked like he still had the fish on but didn't stop to see if he landed it.

Dunno, but might go and check the area out :)

Out tonight on the boat for a couple of days on two different lightly baited spots - Not too confident with the algal bloom but will be nice to get out nevertheless.
The first night saw a 15.8 Common to my mate and a hook pull on another later on. Apart from that it was quiet all weekend - no bream and no chub which was very surprising as in one of the areas we were in the chub are plentiful and typically very voracious.
We filled the afternoons by lure fishing and managed 10 over the two days - all jacks bar one scraper double. Good sport though.
The colour seemed to vary between pounds - some were clearing for sure - others were still that nasty brown colour.

stopped of on my way home last night for a quick look at a couple of spots on the lower, still pretty coloured, I couldnt see the bottom more than a few feet out.
Might have to dig out the smelly hookbaits..........
Im about a 10 min walk from Richmond Lock (Twickenham Bridge), have walked the area a few times but havent seen any anglers about. Is it worth wetting a line? I notice fishing is banned at the weir gates itself but assume either side is ok?
River is still very muddy coloured......
Access to the water on the tides is tricky but there are the odd steps here and there. tidal is often very muddy, rarely clear down that way.
Guy,
Did the common come out in a coloured or clearing swim?
Robin.

Wondered how you'd been doing, reassuring to hear that even you're struggling!
3 nights, one bream for me.
Back down tomorrow night and probably Sunday too.
Let's hope those fish you found are just spawning casualties rather than anything more serious RJ.
popped out earlier for a few hours and bagged a small common just over 12lb
happy days
baited up a few areas yesyerday in anticipation of our first catch.
In the anglers mail this week, my mate told me that thousands of fry were released from a thames water pumping station as the fish spawn got "sucked in" to the station. The fish then hatched, then as they were too big to get out through the filters(?) they grew inside the treatment plant. The Thames water staff, then realised what happened and now 1,000's of fry are in the river!
If this is fact.great stuff for us in a few yeats time. It happened in the Walton area
tonystone
25-06-2009, 08:07
I noticed in the same area there is alot of fry, plus up at chertsey there were thousands of them in the margins around the cabbage weeds.
Have noticed fry before, but not anywhere near the amount I have been seeing this year
Could explain why the carp are not putting in such an appearance. Munching fry and shunning boilees maybe.

Saw the photo's in the Anglers Mail - good news for the river. The majority of the fish in the photo were a tad bigger than fry hence I suppose why they couldnt get out again!

Fished the lasher weir at Hurley last Saturday evening, trotting maggots from the boat, then tried for a barbel as eveing drew in. A few tiny dace and the odd bleak, and no barbel. Bleak were bigger than the dace.
Got my Thames River View Mag this morning, there is an interesting article covering the Elusive return of the Otter to the Thames and that the EA are helping by building resting sites.
Given the Otters love of Eels and the dire situation this species is in, is this not shooting yourself in the foot? Or is this cute and furry wins over wet and slimey?

Good point. No eels, so next up on the foodchain for otters is to eat what is available including carp. Hope the EA are not using rod licence payers money to re-establish the otters. Re-stocking the river with coarse fish should be far more of a priority given the sorry state things are.
Or is this cute and furry wins over wet and slimey?
PMSL, the thoughts that just ran through my head on that statement....
It will always be the same, look 20 years down the line, those Beavers thatwill be reintroduced to Scotland and Norfolk (Or whatever the other place is) will have spread across the nation. Watchout for that dam under Kingston bridge, you won't miss it, it's next to the 70lb carp that eats Sunbless bread dropped over the side of the bridge by Tad.
Hope the EA are not using rod licence payers money to re-establish the otters. Re-stocking the river with coarse fish should be far more of a priority given the sorry state things are.
It seems not, this was done using a grant from the Waterways Trust.
