Had a wander round today and the smell almost knocked me over!! There are @ 8 - 10 big bream dead in the margins of the lake all in the windward upper corner. No carp evident but some common scales where spread all over the footpath. Is everything OK?

The Bream could have something to do with the cormarants, i saw 9 over on the match lake on sat and they were really going for it untill the geese flew around and they went off towards the other side. Don't know if they did go all the way over to the North though http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

No mate, the two in the margins where unmarked and stank like sh#t. Natural causes killed these bream there where no signs of predator damage or physical injury. http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I could smell dead fish (or thats what it smelt like) from the CP on Friday - along the pads / split bank

I did see a cormarant take a jack pike off Deses roughly 2-3lb a couple of months ago.

Ahhhh -

For your info Guv.....

The fish in the North have been 'gulping' a lot lately Ilast weekend)- is this indicative of low oxygen? The weed was awesome and leaves a lot of rotting vegetable matter.......any need for concern???

Bream are usually a dam good indication of a problem. Carp tend to survive to the last, but it should be looked into straight away. unusual to have oxygen problems in low water temperatures, but with the amount of weed in there this year, who knows.

Gulping fish are indeed a sign of low oxygen

Does Ian know about this?

Thats why I posted it M8 so someone more knowledgeable than myself could make a more informed judgement on whether there is need for concern/action.

Hope its nothing to worry about.

There have been a few dead bream in the bay for a couple of months, also a couple around end works.

Mouth of the bay stank of dead fish when I turned up last friday, I had a look in the morning, there was a dead bream which had been half eaten.

Three carp almost had their heads up the inlet pipe from the CP as if they needed oxygen, would stay for about 5 mins, swim off then come back.

The Weed within the lake at the start of the year was canadian pond weed, a high source of oxygen. As the summer progressed by august the pond weed had been covered with blanket weed (which absorbs oxygen rather than produces it I believe) 90% of the weed is no longer on the top and as Lew rightly says is beginning to rot. I know the rotting process requires oxygen and there is a sh*t load of it to rot, however for ages we have had quite a bit of rain and wind to provide oxygen. I would suspect that there is not a problem. ALthough it would be good if all was checked out, water quality tests done or whatever is required. Some of the old stinking silt is over a foot deep in places, does this show all is not rotting completeley on an annual basis ??? I imagine the lake will be chalked during the North Lake regeneration works ???

Hope all is well, Little stalking matty the little ****er has had 2 north lake fish over the last 7 days, so can't imagine its all bad.

I dont know what they are up to in the north. strange behaviour. 1 fish(pad 26) is staying right in the edge for a long time. you can even get right above it and it wont spook. its even staying there at night sometimes. i was watching it under a torch light. other fish will come and sit right next to it. 2 or 3 at a time but they know that your there, theyll back of and hang around the area. the pad 26 rarely spooks. although it did spook last night under the light which is a good sign. some of the other fish dont spook under the light. could be worth a go stalking at night.

my advice would be to stop fishing because something dont sound right and do some thorough checks...rather than causing more stress...because this isnt normal winter behavior....must be down to the rotting vegetation...draining the o2 levels...somethings wrong...because fish have already died..........MY ADVICE CLOSE IT DOWN UNTIL ITS SORTED....!!!!!!!!

the 'pad lake 26' was the last of the Pad lake 5 (If Scale on the Shoulder is dead) which included Henry the Friendly and Jumbo etc. The fish had a problem with its gills, caused by what I don't know, obviously why it sat in the flow to absorb oxygen with minimum effort

Sounds very worrying.
Has Viv been down to take a look yet?

This fish has not been too good for some time, since it was put in the North Lake. It used to be within 4oz of 26lb every capture, but in the last couple of years it's weight has been around the 22-24lb mark.

Sad news indeed, if scale is gone, then the pad lake and it's residents are consigned to the history books.

I don't believe Viv has been down yet, fortunately Ben from Sparsholt was around on Saturday, we removed the fish to see a problem with the gills, (they looked a bit grey and not quite right).

25-11-2002, 11:57
when a person cannot breath, hypoxia or whatever, lips etc. tend to turn bluey/grey. grey gills could be indicative of an oxygen starved fish but then i'm no bioloogist.

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to see the fish at the end of last week due to other fishy commitments.
I spoke to Ben and Ray on the saturday and we decided that the fish was beyond probable 'repair'. The possibility of collecting it was zero as this would almost have certainly killed it, whilst in transit.
I was hoping to take it to a vet lab to carry out an investigative autopsy but they don't work weekends! the fish has to be alive (or freshly dead) when they recive it so they can do bacteriology etc.
On that note, if anyone sees a distressed fish ( bream or carp) please let us know and I will try to get one to the lab so we can find out what is occurring at the North.

Lewis
26-11-2002, 09:47
Cheers Viv - fairly certain its linked to the vast amount of weed rotting and low oxygen (perhaps the stress was too much for this one old fish and has developed a nasty infection of the gills)

If it is weed will circumsatnce improve due to dropping water temperatures through the late autumn/winter

Will let other syndicate members/bailiffs know to keep an eye open - lets hope all will settle....

The problem is that that fish was not the only one behaving oddly, ODDIE was having a go at the inlet the sunday before last, there were 2 other fish with the 'PL 26' with their heads almost up the pipe. I must admit they were/are much livelier than the '26' but their could be a problem.

With the weed thing, I appreciate that there is a huge amount of vegetation to rot down, but there has been so much wind and rain over the last few weeks providing a large amount of oxygen, do you think the rotting vegetation is absorbing all this oxygen?

What about the blanket weed that covered the pondweed by August, could this have had an impact ?

Any thoughts ?

Lewis
26-11-2002, 10:31
100% agree - the filamentous algae that covered everything cant be good when it rots....

fingers crossed chaps.....

I thought the same thing about the ammount of wind and rain, i have been doing some repairs on my ponds over the last few weeks, and i thought it would be OK to leave the pump off for a couple of days, but after 36 hours, all the fish were on the surface gagging for air, i too have quite a lot of wed that is breaking down!!!!!

Any connection? http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/confused.gif

tcpcrewontour
26-11-2002, 11:16
seriously mate you want to remove all the dead and rotting vegetation from your pond ...Make sure you turn your pump off over winter...because by leaving it on you will be disturbing the temperature layers in the pond ,bringing the warmer water to the surface....the end result is a pond with no warmer bottom layer and the fish start to get chilled and die .....so turn your pump off or take water from the top layer and return back with out to much disturbance...it might save your fisshes life...another key factor about maintaining a small pond with filter is to clean the filter out with the same water and not tap water, as it kills the bacteria which keep the pond clean and healthy....dont neglect your fish....from past experience i have saved fishes lives by telling people how to manage ther ponds.....

26-11-2002, 11:20
draw from the top layers and return to the top layers. not a good idea to turn off the filter if you feed them through the winter (as im sure you will http://www.rmcangling.co.uk/forum/images/graemlins/wink.gif)
and stick an air stone up the return pipe... nicely oxygenated water !

tcpcrewontour
26-11-2002, 11:29
unless you are feeding your fish( which they dont need) then its best to turn your filter off....they dont need it ....turn my filter off every year stop feeding and have never lost a fish ...but then i know what im doing .....i know koi keepers leave there filters on but thats only cos they are not as tough as carp....NEVER TAKE WATER FROM THE BOTTOM AND RETURN TO THE SURFACE IN THE WINTER........NO WIND UP...TRUST ME IT WILL SAVE YOUR FISH

OneToner

The thing with a biological filter, is that to maintain the effectiveness of the biological filter chamber, it requires oxygen to work, in fact the biological filter absorbs horrendous amounts of oxygen. (why I haven't made this connection with the rotting veg within the north lake I don't know, but its balatantly plain to me now). If Koi are kept in the pond the water within the pond should pass through the filter between half and once an hour.

I do take your point on recirculating water affecting temperature layers but how do you take this into account with the above ???

Also any decent filter system will allow you to clean certain sections of the filter media so you don't have a completely clean filter, as a clean filter is an ineffective filter. And never use tap water to clean it.

With my pond 3500 gallons and evaporation is quite a problem in warm dry conditions, top up water from the tap should be de chlorinated as it goes in the pond.

keep your filter runnin, get a better weight gain

If the fish are showing signs of distress, would it not be prudent to stop fishing for them for a while ?

My main open water spot hasn't been fished for weeks, although heavily baited on a regular basis........watch this space, if the carp god is smiling down on me then Scale could be bagged this weekend at 42lb.......ahhhhhh(dreamy sigh)

tcpcrewontour
26-11-2002, 12:16
maybe you are chucking in to much bait mate.....i dont think anyone should be fishing until the problems sorted..........

OneToner
26-11-2002, 12:46
I can't see that I'm chucking in to much bait, I am the only one putting the bait in, I believe last year 1 tonne of pellet went in between 2 anglers let alone the bait from other anglers. Also when Baz was in there anglers were absolutely hauling in the boilies

Like I say, if there is a problem then I will stop fishing. RMC need to check the venue out and advise. The fish that died was an old fish, Sparsholt Ben looked at the fish and didn't appear to be particularly worried about the others.

The good thing about fishing the north is that my eyes are on the water to monitor the situation, not that I am a fishery manager.

tcpcrewontour
26-11-2002, 13:42
fair point but its not just one carp thats died , a few bream as well...........keep your eyes peeled.......and report anything strange .........sounds like the fish are hanging round the inlet to get fresh oxygenated water.....maybe it will get better......

Cooperman

This will be my 3rd winter with this pond, and i have a mixture of carp, koi and goldfish . orfe in there. Not lost a fish through the winter yet. Only turn off the filter if the temp drops to below minus3, then as soon as it goes back up, i put it back on.

My fish have doubled in size over the colder months, but they are mainly in the 8oz - 3lb bracket.

I top up the pond regulary with tap water, but i do have 15,000 litres between the 2 ponds, and they are linked with a waterfall. Plenty of oxygen, the filter has a nice layer of 2" thick silt in the bottom, and more critters live in there than in the pond, mainly because the carp spend all day digging around looking for them.
